Rotterdam-based design firm MVRDV, has designed the library of tomorrow: the Tianjin Binhai Library in China.

The 32,000 sq m space features a five-storey library and educational centre and also forms the entrance to the area’s thriving cultural district. Upon entering the vast space, visitors are greeted by a librarian who is seated in front of a giant white Orb.

The building features a luminous spherical auditorium and floor-to-ceiling cascading bookcases. An oval opening is punched through the building, propped open by the ‘eye’, a luminous sphere with an auditorium and stage.

Terraced bookshelves form the sphere of the building and wrap around the façade with the visitor feeling enveloped by volumes. Small inserts in the shelving create open space for working and reading areas.

This impressive space gives a reason to visit physical bookstores and put the Kindle away.
