“Let’s Change”. UK Retail Reopens

Retail, en masse, reopens in the UK on Monday and a quick walk around central London on Friday revealed a simple fact: many retailers have foundered during lockdown, but those that remain have been busy getting ready for the pent-up demand of shoppers denied shops.

Perhaps the most obvious sign of this was to be found on Oxford Street where Selfridges unveiled its windows ahead of the retail renaissance with a theme of renewal, change and new growth. Interestingly, this could equally be seen to be the sort of thing that signals spring, but in 2021 it has a particular poignance.

And above the individual messages in each window, the store had a signal banner headline in bright yellow, on the upper levels of its south-east corner: “Let’s change”. Given all that has happened over the last few months, it’s a telling story.
