Nordstrom Opens its Biggest Store, in New York
After several years of planning and building, Seattle-based department store retailer opens its first full-line store in New York today. At 320,000 sq ft, this is a huge, seven-floor enterprise and one that is aimed at the very affluent folk found in the district immediately to the south of the city’s Central Park.
From the moment the shopper arrives this one has wow factor with the store frontage being an an undulating glass wave with the world’s highest residential tower, a thin spike, directly above it. More to the point, this is a store that mixes the traditional, in terms of brands such as YSL and Chanel, with the highly contemporary, in a bid to attract the NY youth crowd.
It also manages to do everything from a collaboration with Nike to putting a bar, inevitably, ‘the Shoe Bar’, in the middle of the shoe department.
Nordstrom opened a men’s store more or less next door in April last year and now it has a full showing in the Big Apple. It will be interesting to see how it performs.
