Increasingly, convenience means different things to different people, from the very high-end deli-style emporium to a corner shop offering little more than newpapers, drinks, tobacco and a limited range of ambient food.
To see what’s possible at the more value-led end of things, however, a trip to the new Simply Fresh store in Redditch’s Kingfisher Centre might be in order. This is a thing of black ceiling, black metal fixturing and wood, with the latter being used to highlight promotional areas in the store. It is also a vehicle for a very strong graphics package, in which decals are plastered across the perimeter chiller units and signs are stenciled on wood placards, dotted around the mid-shop.
This is not just a food to go and food for now pitstop, but also happens to be something that might just cause the convenience shopper to pause and spend a little longer than might usually be the case.
